Whisky-Producing Regions
In the (contested) birthplace of whisky, Scotland, there have been distilleries growing and dying across the land for hundreds of years. That said, there are some regions where whisky-producing has grown prevalent due to the perfect conditions for distilling. There are even six whisky-producing regions in Scotland which are protected by law. The Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009 lays out the first five, stating that Highlands, Lowlands, Speyside, Islay and Campbeltown are all protected under this regulation. The Islands is another area which is disputed as being an official whisky-producing region, as it is not mentioned in the regulation but does contain a large variety of distilleries.
Whisky Age Statements
Nearly every whisky you will buy currently has an age statement on the bottle. All single malt whisky has to be matured, legally, for a minimum of 3 years. However, many popular whiskies are matured for far longer, some for 25 and some even for 50 years. The number on the front of the bottle signifies the age of the youngest whisky in the blend. For example, within a 25 year old whisky there may be traces of whiskies from the same distillery which are far older.
