The Evolution of Marketing

Marketing Online

Marketing or advertising has come a long way since its inception. Grabbing the attention of the masses was once a simple formula that delivered time after time. An advert was displayed to the public and the message was delivered. A simpler time indeed. Nowadays you cannot walk the length of yourself without being sold something in one form or another. The human race has almost become immune to traditional marketing methods as we are bombarded on an hourly basis.

The Teachings of Marketing

What is being taught in our schools, colleges and universities has seen this change and is beginning to finally adapt. The way businesses market to their audiences has changed without many noticing. Gone are the days when people will stop and stare at a poster at the local cinema promoting the latest blockbuster. Today’s world of marketers have to be more subtle and creative to grab the attention of a generation that filters 99% of advertising clutter out of their minds. How did this change happen you may be asking yourself? Have a look below to find out how marketing changed and what the future of advertising could potentially look like.

Offline Ads

The Hey-day of Offline Marketing

The way we as an audience are marketed towards has changed over the generations. Both the methods used and platforms utilised have evolved through necessity more than anything else. Offline methods of magazines, newspapers, posters, radio and TV ads once ruled the land but have become a shadow of their formal self in today’s world or marketing. Rarely does an offline advertisement captivate the attention of the public with most of them being tuned out and ignored. Although businesses themselves know this, they still feel that getting their brand out there will eventually become ingrained in our minds and pop up the next time we think of whatever it is we need from their industry. This in itself is a debatable method with so many company’s campaigns falling by the wayside and failing to register with the desired market. Offline marketing will always have its place in history and be reminisced as time goes on. There may, however, be a new age of advertising just around the corner.

The Dawning of the Digital Age

The evolution from offline advertising methods spawned the dawning of a new era, the online, digital age. Today’s society spends an average of 20 hours a week online, and you would be foolish for thinking that big businesses were not going to take advantage of this. We spend double the amount of time online than just 10 years ago which means advertising has found a new home and is able to target an audience which it was once in danger of losing. Online methods which have gained momentum include websites, social media, google ads, video streaming, podcasts, PPC and a whole host more. The world of marketing is online and it doesn’t look like changing anytime soon. So, marketers out there, the world is online, as if you didn’t know it already.
